A. Hattrick Scholarship in Education
This scholarship has been endowed by Andrew Hattrick in honour of his family for students in the Bachelor of Education program, Secondary option. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.
Alice V. Borden Memorial Prize
This scholarship is intended to encourage the dynamic spirit of dedication to excellence and integrity in learning and teaching which was exemplified in Alice V. Borden, Assistant Professor of Education who specialized in pre-school education at UBC from 1958-1971. The scholarship is awarded on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education to an outstanding student completing the first year of the program and proceeding to an Early Childhood specialization in the second year.
Alishia Nora Harris Memorial Practicum Award
This practicum award has been endowed by family and friends in memory of Alishia Nora Harris (B.F.A.'03, B.Ed.'07), who loved teaching children through arts and was always thrilled to share everything she had learned from her studies at UBC. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education to a teacher candidate in the Bachelor of Education (Elementary) Program, with preference given to a teacher candidate who uses creative arts in his/her teaching practicum or whose concentration is expressive arts.
Alka Goel Prize in Business Education
This prize is awarded to the Business Education student with the highest standing in courses and practice teaching.
Amy E. Sauder NITEP Scholarship
Scholarships are made possible by a bequest from Amy Sauder and the Sauder Foundation, and are presented on the recommendations of Coordinators from all NITEP field centres.
Aunna Currie Memorial Prize
This prize has been endowed in memory of Aunna Currie by her family. It is awarded to an outstanding student of the Bachelor of Education Secondary option who intends to teach Social Studies.
Brissenden Scholarship in Art Education
This scholarship is awarded to a student who, prior to teacher certification, submits an outstanding learning resource related to visual art or art education in B.C.
C.K. Choi Scholarship in Secondary Education
These scholarships are awarded to outstanding students entering the Bachelor of Education, Secondary option.
Captain C.Y. Wu Scholarship
Captain Chao Yu Wu and his wife Chiu Hui Wu, MSc, PhD have endowed this scholarship from the proceeds of a retirement allowance for Captain Wu from BC Hydro. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.
Chitose Uchida Memorial Prize
Dr. M. Uchida has endowed this prize in memory of Chitose Uchida, BA, 1916, the first Japanese-Canadian to graduate from UBC in Arts. A teacher for many years in Alberta, Miss Uchida retired in Vancouver. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Faulty of Education to a student entering the Bachelor of Education program with a high standing in Arts courses.
Dean of Education Scholarships
These scholarships are awarded to students in each program option whose work in courses and in the extended practicum has been exemplary.
Dr. Maxwell Cameron Memorial Prize
This prize is awarded, in cooperation with the BC Teachers Federation, to an outstanding student in each of the Elementary and Secondary options. The students selected are judged to be outstanding among their peers.
Dr. Thomas A. Howitz Prize in Math Education
Thomas Howitz served UBC for twenty years. This prize is awarded in his memory to an outstanding student in Mathematics Education, made on the recommendation of the Department of Curriculum Studies, Faculty of Education.
Don Wright Scholarship in Instrumental Music Education
With the aim of strengthening instrumental music in the schools, Dr. Don Wright endowed this scholarship to be awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Curriculum Studies to a student in the Music Education program who has demonstrated talent achievement in practical instrumental arranging and orchestration.
Don Wright Scholarship in Vocal/Choral Music Education
With the aim of strengthening vocal and choral music teaching in the schools, grades 5 to 10, Dr. Don Wright endowed this scholarship to be awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Curriculum Studies to a student in the Music Education program who has demonstrated a special aptitude for and exceptional teaching of vocal and choral music.
Donald C. Gibbard Prize in Music Education
This prize has been endowed in honour of Donald C. Gibbard, who was for many years Chair of the Music Education Department. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Curriculum Studies to an outstanding student in Music Education, in the Faculty of Education.
Dora S. Simpson Memorial Scholarship
These scholarships are awarded to needy and deserving students in the Faculty of Education.
Edna Baxter Memorial Prize
This memorial prize serves as a tribute to Edna Baxter’s work as a teacher. It is awarded to an undergraduate of distinction in English Education: Children’s Literature.
Eleanore Vaines Scholarship
Scholarships are awarded in honour of Dr. Eleanore Vaines to students in the Faculty of Education, with preference given for students with a concentration or major in Home Economics. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Faculty.
Elizabeth Kendall Scholarship in Education
This scholarship is awarded to students in English Education or Language Arts.
Elmore Ozard Art Education Prize
This prize is presented to students with notable achievement in visual art courses and who demonstrate excellent teaching potential.
Emily Longworth Memorial Award
In honour of the memory of Emily Longworth, a teacher candidate who was an inspiration and role model to fellow students, these awards are offered to those whose practica involve curricula or extra-curricular activites promoting multicultural understanding, healthy lifestyle, environmental awareness, and achieving full life potential. Candidates annually apply by January 30 through the Teacher Education Office. Awards are recommended by the Faculty.
Fenwick Farris Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded by the University of Women’s Club of Vancouver to a woman entering the Bachelor of Education program based upon her personal qualities and academic record.
George Brooks White Memorial Prize
An award endowed in memory of Mr. White in recognition of his dedication to the teaching of English, it is awarded to an outstanding student in Secondary English.
Gordon Sinclair Wilson Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship has been endowed through the behest of Anna Letitia Wilson, a UBC graduate. The award is offered to a Bachelor of Education student and is made on the recommendation of the Faculty.
Hazel and Jack Grimmett Scholarship
Scholarships are awarded for outstanding students in the Elementary and Secondary options who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada.
Henry and Lilly Kung Award in Education
An award endowed in honour of Henry and Lily Kung for a student in a Bachelor of Education degree program who have maintained satisfactory academic standing and who have participated in extra-curricular or volunteer activities or part-time employment. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty.
Jack Young Prize
Jack Young, an outstanding science teacher in BC whose career extended over 56 years with 22 years in secondary schools, two in elementary schools and 19 at UBC in Science Education, has endowed this prize. It is awarded upon the recommendation of the Department of Science Education at the end of the extended practicum to two students demonstrating excellence in teaching middle years and secondary science.
Jeanette Dewitt-Huberman Memorial Prize
This prize is offered to students preparing to teach exceptional groups and who demonstrate qualities of vitality, sincerity, and an understanding of ethnic or religious based differences.
Joan Tuey Scholarship in Early Childhood Education
Scholarships have been endowed by Leon and Joan Tuey for students concentrating in Early Childhood Education and are made upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.
John Francis Lidstone Scholarship
This scholarship is offered in alternate years to a student in either Education or Arts. The award is based on the recommendation of faculty
Karen Hawkins Memorial Scholarship in Education
This scholarship honours the memory of Karen Lynn Nimmo Hawkins. Ms. Hawkins was an outstanding educator and inspirational leader with remarkable abilities to empower her students to discover, develop and share their unique talents. This award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty.
Kathleen Elliott Memorial Scholarship
This endowment is in memory of Kathleen Elliot. The scholarship is awarded to an Elementary student who has demonstrated abilities in visual art and who will specialize in art education at the Elementary level.
Kay Norgan Meek Scholarship in Education
These awards are for outstanding students who demonstrate potential success in teaching. They are presented to students from any options including the West Kootenay Teacher Education Program.
Leon Tuey Scholarship in Art Education
Scholarships have been endowed by Leon and Joan Tuey for students in Art Education. They are presented to Secondary students with a major or concentration in Art and are recommended by the Faculty of Education.
Margaret Cameron Scholarship in Teacher Education
A bequest from Margaret Cameron provides scholarships for students in various Bachelor of Education program options whose work has been recognized for excellence.
Margaret Murphy Scholarship
The BC Home Economics Association Scholarship Foundation and the Vancouver Home Economics Teachers offer this scholarship to a graduate of a BC Secondary school who is preparing for a teaching career in Home Economics Education. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.
Marilyn Hunnings Memorial Scholarship in Education
Scholarships are presented to students in both Elementary and Secondary options on the basis of noteworthy achievement during the program.
Mary A. Bryant Scholarship in Education
This award is offered to a student entering the Bachelor of Education Secondary program with a degree in Biology. It is made based upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.
Mary Amelia Thomson Prize in Early Childhood Education
This award is bestowed upon a student in the Early Childhood specialization with preference for those studying the role of education and peace in the lives of young children.
Mathilde MacInnes Memorial Scholarship
Established by Mr. W. H. MacInnes as a memorial to his wife, Mathilde MacInnes, this award is presented to an outstanding student completing the first year of the Two-Year option.
Michael J. Crooks Memorial Scholarship
This award was founded by family, friends and colleagues in memory of Mr. Crooks, a member of the UBC Department of Physics and co-founder of the B.C. Physics Olympiad. It is presented to a student entering the Secondary option preparing to teach Physics and is made upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.
Mollie Cottingham Scholarship
This scholarship has been endowed in memory of former Faculty of Education member Mollie Cottingham. Miss E. Cottingham retired as Professor Emerita in the Faculty of Education in 1971 after being on staff for 13 years. It is awarded to a student who has successfully completed first year in Elementary or Secondary education, and preference is given to a student specializing in history within social studies.
Murray Elliott Service Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Teacher Ed
This award honours faculty and staff who have shown exceptional dedication, commitment and leadership skills in the delivery or in the improvement of the program over an extended period of time.
Nancy Allan Memorial Scholarship
This award, recognizing Nancy Allan’s qualities as a performer and youth leader, is presented to a student in Music Education who best combines musicianship with the ability to communicate the spirit of music to others.
Neville and Gladys Scarfe Memorial Prize
This award is bestowed in memory of former Dean Neville Scarfe and his wife, Gladys Scarfe. Dean Scarfe, regarded as one of the most distinguished scholars in the field of education when he was appointed to head the newly established Faculty of Education at UBC, continued to take an active interest in his academic discipline, geography, and more generally, in social studies. Made upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education, the prize is directed to an outstanding student who demonstrates significant achievement in teaching social studies.
Outstanding Practicum Award
This award is presented to Elementary, Middle Years and Secondary students whose work during the extended practicum identified them as teachers of exceptional promise. Recipients of this award receive a distinctive pin.
Phi Delta Kappa Scholarship in Education
These scholarships are for students in both Elementary and Secondary options who have good academic records and who have shown an ability and aptitude for teaching. It is provided by the UBC Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa.
Rob Gray Memorial Award
Endowed as a memorial to Rob Gray who died while still studying in Multicultural and Minority Education, this award is presented to a NITEP student.
Robert H. Heywood Prize
This prize is awarded to the Business Education student with the highest standing in the Bachelor of Education program.
Robert W. Sterling Memorial NITEP Award
In memory of Robert W. Sterling, who was a founder of the Native Indian Teacher Education Program, this award is given to the student in the NITEP graduating class (spring or previous fall) who has made the greatest contribution to NITEP through his/her years in the program and who exemplifies Robert Sterling’s qualities of leadership. The award is made on the recommendation of NITEP.
Sam Black Prize
Offered by the West Vancouver Sketch Club, this prize is awarded to an outstanding student taking courses in art education, in the Faculty of Education.
Sharp Family NITEP Graduation Prize
This prize has been endowed for an outstanding student of the NITEP graduating class (spring or previous fall) for the Bachelor of Education, Elementary option. The recommendation is made by the Faculty of Education.
Shirley M. Wong Award in Education
This award has been endowed by the Canadian Chapter of the International Society for Business Education for an outstanding student in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Program with preference for a student whose major or concentration is Business Education. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.
Sonia Craddock Memorial Prize
This prize has been endowed in memory of Sonia Craddock, elementary teacher, reading researcher, teacher educator, and author of children’s literature. It is offered to a Faculty of Education student who achieves distinction in a children’s literature course. Preference is given to a student who uses children’s literature effectively in a teaching practicum. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.
Stella Shopland Memorial Prize
Endowed in memory of Stella Shopland by her friends and associates, this prize serves to mark the esteem and affection in which she was held by her colleagues and students. In tribute to her special interest in children’s literature, this prize is awarded to a student in the Faculty of Education with outstanding achievement in a children’s literature course.
Thomas A Quayle Prize
This prize is presented to the student admitted in Technology Education with the highest average in Admission Requirements courses.
Tsutae and Hanako Sato Prize
This award commemorates 100 years of Japanese immigration to Canada. It is awarded to a student in the Elementary option whose work has been exemplary.
University Women’s Club of Vancouver – Dr. Evelyn Fenwick Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a woman who has graduated from another faculty and is entering the Bachelor of Education program. She is an individual well qualified in terms of personal qualities and academic record.
University Women’s Club of Vancouver Scholarship in Education
This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in the Bachelor of Education, Secondary option.
University of B.C. Alumni NITEP Scholarship
Awards are offered to assist students in the Native Indian Teacher Education Program. These awards are made on the recommendation of Coordinators based upon academic achievement in the field centres.
W.R.F. Seal Prize
This prize is presented to a student who received outstanding achievement in Admissions Requirements course work completed prior to teacher certification in Technology Education. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.
Women in Technology Teacher Education Prize
Prizes have been endowed by UBC Alumni and friends to provide academic recognition and support for female students majoring in technology studies within the Bachelor of Education Program. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty to women who have achieved academic excellence as well as career success in the technology field.
