Course Requirements & Selection

Diploma Course Requirements

See Fields of Diploma Specialization for information about all of the Diploma options and their specific course requirements.

The Diploma in Education requires the completion of 30 credits of senior coursework (courses numbered 300 or higher) with an average standing of 65%. The courses must be complete within five years.

Where junior prerequisites are specified (courses numbered below 300), these are in addition to the minimum requirements of the Diploma. In some cases, prerequisite academic background at a senior level is required. For example, a Diploma in Math Education requires an academic Math background. A Math teacher would be extending professional preparation in this area.

Up to 18 credits of appropriate UBC course work can be taken prior to enrolling in the Diploma and 12 credits can be taken at another institution. See Advanced Standing and Transfer of Credits for limitations and procedures

When one Diploma is complete, a second Diploma may be undertaken.

Students who choose a specialization in the Diploma in Education, that is the same as the area of concentration in their initial teacher preparation in the two year elementary program, may find their course choices are limited.

Courses taken to fulfill degree requirements cannot be applied to the Diploma.

Diploma Course Selection

Diploma courses are specified as either core requirements or electives.

Course selection must include the listed required core courses as well as electives. The electives must be conceptually consistent with the Diploma. Some elective descriptions state that choices must be "approved." In this case, contact the Department Advisor for that Diploma before registering in the course of your choice. Students are responsible for ensuring that courses are acceptable within the Diploma specialization.

Where there is no indication of required approval, course selection can be made from the list provided.

For course descriptions, course schedules and (eventually) registration go to www.students.ubc.ca/calendar. Not all courses in a Diploma will be offered every year or every term. Teachers who work full-time will find many classes are scheduled between 4:30 - 7:30 during the fall and winter sessions. Many courses are offered in summer session.

  1.
Appropriate Pass/Fail courses are acceptable in Diplomas. Note that some school districts do not accept Pass/Fail courses for change of TQS category. Approvals from the district should be sought prior to registering in these courses. Link to pass/fail list.

Some courses and Diplomas are also offered through Distance Education. There is no limit to the number of distance education courses taken to fulfill the specified requirements. See External Programs and Learning Technologies.
