When you've completed the Middle Years BEd program option, you have the benefit of being prepared for teaching Elementary Grades K-7, having met those entrance requirements, as well as for a Secondary teaching specialization. It's ideal!
Here's how you prepare to be accepted to the program:
Academic Requirements Pre-Admissions Analysis
You must have completed the Middle Years academic requirements including the overall requirement of a 4-year (120 credit) degree of acceptable courses.
For Middle Years Option, admission averages are normally calculated on 33 credits of courses (39 for English), including 6 credits of English, 3 credits of math, 3 credits of a lab science, 3 credits of history or geography and 18 senior (third/fourth year) credits (24 for English) as specified for the option.
Download the Middle Years Academic Requirements Worksheet for your particular subject area specialization, and check it against your transcript(s) to date. You may need further coursework to prepare for both Elementary and the Secondary teaching specialization, and this tool will help you plan for course(s).
The minimum average for admission is 65%. Because there are more qualified applicants than seats available, a higher academic average is normally required for admission to the options. The GPA evaluation differs from year to year depending on the number of applications received and their particular academic performances. Other factors such as the available seats in teaching subject specializations and the range of applicants' coursework completed also influence the minimum admission averages.
Note: Overall academic performance as indicated by the number of failing grades and/or academic discipline will be considered in admission decisions.
The British Columbia College of Teachers (BCCT)
UBC Teacher Education is an approved program for certification upon graduation by the BC College of Teachers. Therefore, in addition to the described UBC prerequisites, applicants must satisfy certification requirements as prescribed by BC College of Teachers. The Faculty of Education will only offer admission to applicants who have satisfied the BCCT certification requirement.
Experience Requirements
To fully prepare for admission to the Middle Years option, applicants must also satisfy Experience Entrance Requirements. You must have volunteered or worked in some capacity in a group setting with children or youth, preferable of the age level you wish to teach. We are looking for a minimum of 75 hours, and it can be a total of various experiences put together…
For full details, go to the Steps to Apply section of this website.
Applicants must submit for evaluation:
The evaluation of the information provided is an integral part of the selection process. Evaluators seek confirmation of qualities suited to a future teacher as based on appropriate volunteer/work experience, referee reports and the personal essay. Also what needs to be demonstrated is excellence in written and oral communication in English as demonstrated in the essay and/or reflected in referee comments.
The Admissions Committee may also request a personal interview.
Offer of Admission
When both academic and experiential evaluations are acceptable, written offers of admission are normally sent to successful applicants between May to early July for September admission.
Unfortunately, not all qualified applicants may be offered admission. Unsuccessful applicants to all options will be notified in writing of the reasons admission is denied. If not accepted, you may ask TEO to retain your essay and referee forms for one year only so that you may apply to the next year’s admission.
Admission Policy About Completion of Requirements
We give preference to applicants who complete all academic requirements by the end of April of a given application year.
Your application will also be considered if you are completing academic requirements between May to August before program start, based on available program spaces. As a result, it is likely that you may not be offered admission until July and August, after all qualified candidates who have completed all academic requirements by April have been admitted to the program.
Ranking Your Teacher Education Option Preference(s)
You may apply to a maximum of two teacher education options by indicating preferences, in ranked order, on the application form. For example, the 12-Month Middle Years Option may be indicated as a first choice and the Elementary Option as a second choice. When selecting applicants for an option, preference is given to the applicant’s first choice. Second choices will be considered only when space remains in the option following the selection of all eligible first choice applicants.
BEd online application system opens starting in December 2009.
Includes online application and all supplemental forms (see BEd Application Checklist).
Late applications submitted after deadline until April 30, 2010 considered based on available program spaces.
