Since French is one of Canada’s official languages, French language teachers are always in demand in our schools. The BEd Secondary and Elementary 12-month options are available for French Language teaching opportunities:
Elementary French Specialists may choose to teach French in elementary schools in the following ways: French Immersion (teaching subject content in French), Core French (teaching French as a subject among general subjects in the English program), Intensive French (teaching French in an intensive immersion-like semester in Grade 6), and Francophone Schools (teaching subject content in French within the Conseil Scolaire Francophone).
When enrolled in the French Specialist program, most of the classes are taught in French; as well, practica occur in French Immersion or in regular schools offering Core French, Intensive French, or in Francophone schools. Within the 12-month BEd program, learning content in French allows teacher candidates to continue to develop their French skills during the year. Emphasis is put on teaching French as a second or additional language, on teaching content in French, and on learning about language development, bilingualism and educational language policies.
Requirements for Core French:
Teaching French Language as a subject among several subjects in an English program (Grades 5-8)
9 credits at 200 level (literature, grammar, composition)
Elementary Core French Generalists - FLAGS (French Language & Global Studies Cohort) may not speak French fluently but are able to communicate at a rudimentary level and are interested in developing their French language proficiency as well as the methodological skills to teach and inspire others to learn the language. The program starts in July with a 5-week summer French language immersion experience at a French-Canadian university (eligible for provincially-administered federal funding by way of reimbursement). Following the immersion experience in September, teacher candidates take the regular BEd coursework conducted mainly in English as for elementary generalists but including French methodology coursework. The practicum takes place in generalist elementary classrooms with core French as an additional specialty teaching area that the teacher candidate delivers to several classes in the practicum school.
Requirements for FLAGS (French Language & Global Studies):
12-month Elementary Core French Cohort to Grades 5-8
Involves a funded Summer French Language Program preceding the BEd program
Suitable for individuals planning to teach grades 5-7
French 11 or equivalent
Strong desire to improve your own French proficiency and inspire others to do the same
