Tracy Smith

What’s more exciting—directing a film or a class of English 11 Tracy Smith 1students? Tracy can tell you both situations satisfy because she’s done both. Teaching, she says, gives her a sense of belonging and purpose. Connecting with students, sparking their enthusiasm for literature and drama, and their confidence to write, drew on all her resources and helped her develop new ones. She has become an extraordinary educator.

At 33, Tracy has come to teaching as a "mature" student. She has worked as a film-maker and screen-writer and taught English Language Learners for many years. Consequently, she approached her practicum with some self-assurance.

She attributes her most significant professional development to long, reflective conversations with her Faculty Associate." She helped me develop the ability to listen closely to the students and respond to them thoughtfully and meaningfully."

Her students, in response, told her, "You get it, Ms Smith!"

Tracy identifies two major accomplishments in her practicum: helping each student in her writing class produce a short, self-authored film, and finding a calling teaching secondary school that she can "look forward to every day."
