Paul Doig - Extended Practicum Beyond the Classroom Option (EPBCO)
Paul Doig worked as an electrical engineer for 12 years before enrolling in the UBC Science cohort. Following a successful practicum, Paul wrote to the Teacher Education Office to comment on the Extended Practicum Beyond the Classroom Option (EPBCO): it is "an amazing capstone opportunity… [E]very Science Teacher Candidate should have the opportunity to participate. Teaching in this informal setting was highly engaging and I benefited greatly from my time at Science World."
Paul’s in-school practicum was also a success — he applied collaborative, hands-on strategies in his science classes, building understanding and enthusiasm for the subject among his students. He is also proud of the relationships he established with them — in an extra-curricular program, he coached and accompanied a team of physics students to UBC’s Physics Olympics.
Paul believes his EPBCO experience helped develop and extend his teaching skills. As a secondary teacher he learned a lot working with elementary-aged students. The flexibility and immediacy of the Science World practicum allowed him to learn new strategies, test untried ideas and challenge himself to participate in education beyond the school.
"I learned how to introduce and build a program that is about inquiry based education. It has influenced my approach to how to teach in a Physics classroom."
