After completing his degree (the first in his family to do so) in his native England, Kevin spent several years teaching English Language Learners — first in Poland and then locally. Kevin met the love of his life in England and eventually followed her home to Vancouver.
Kevin completed a successful practicum in the spring. His Faculty Associate, recognizing him as an extraordinary educator, remarked on Kevin’s enthusiasm, his pleasure in teaching and learning, and the way his presence and style established interest among his students. As Kevin says, if we genuinely enjoy teaching and love the students, "they will come with you" into the subject at hand.
Kevin’s curriculum included “bits and bobs” of various materials — primary sources, audio/visual aids, and on-line resources. His classes were active, characterized by debates and discussion to help students establish connections from local circumstances to global conditions. Kevin is most proud of his risk-taking — he adapted a game from the internet to simulate the connection between ecological and economic concerns. Students participated in the "market" of the environment, grappling with the complexity of international implications of global warming. Kevin believes he guided his students through controversy and open dialogue to recognize their place in and responsibilities to the world around them.
